Aerial Imaging - Sky Surfer Gallery 2006

Summer 2006: Sucess!

From May to August 2006, I successfully flew the Sky Surfer several times with the Dimage X20 on board. There were a few hard landings and two failed launches, but no damages worth mentioning occured.

Images like the one to the right were the first to be taken on every single flight, before launch, to determine if the trigger circuit for the camera was working, just like any RC pilot wiggles the steering servo and blips the throttle before taking off. After the landing I usually made happier faces than that ;-)

Flight 10 of the skysurfer, second flight with the X202 camera onboard, on a beautiful morning.
My very first actual aerial still image. A bit blurred, but better than my first IR shot :-)

This is the "Naabspitz", where the Naab river (top right) meets the Danube (left to bottom right) and you can actually see the two different colors of the waters.

Flight 11, shortly before sunset. Looking straight down An Den Klostergründen, the construction site Benediktusweg is to the right. On the horizon the Keilberg quarry, the towers of the Dom, and the skyscrapers of Königswiesen can be seen.

Flight 12, around sunset, but overcast, so the lighting was suboptimal. You may spot Keilberg and the Dom in the distance, and me on the path at the lower right.

Flight 13, at sunset. View south from Pflanzgarten Flight Range, including the village of Großprüfening and a railway personnel training facility on the right and the Autobahn bridge over the Danube to Sinzing in the distance. The Benediktusweg/Rennweg construction site is in the foreground again, of course.

Flight 14, later afternoon, an hour after a thunderstorm. While this image isn't particularly informative - the only visible feature is the Naab river valley - I kinda like it. It looks like we're flying really high.

Looking to the east over Regensburg. In the center of the image, the former horse race track Rennplatz, now built up with all white houses, can be seen. The hint is the curved southern end of the residential area mimicking the race track. On the right, railroads run into the city.

Großprüfening and a railway bridge over the Danube in the foreground, Sinzing and the winding river valley in the distance.

Schloß Prüfening, a 12th century monastery which now houses a Montessori school. In the foreground there are allotment gardens and on the left a school for the blind is being constructed.

Nice low-altitude shot of my own neighborhood.

Flight 15. View from above "Poplar Hill" north-west to Großprüfening and the curve of the Danube, with red glowing sunset mists in the Naab valley.

Flight 18, after sunset. Looking to the east over Regensburg again. This is probably the highest altitude picture I have taken with the Sky Surfer so far - a calibrated guess says 350 meters above ground.
