"Widicam" is pronounced "veedy-cam", not "why-die-cam". the name is derived from "dawidi" (pronounced like, but not meaning "the weedy"), a nickname that evolved years ago during some childhood games I don't completely remember. I think being dawidi originally meant being insane in a cute way, and somehow that nickname got stuck to me. Widicam is then simply "dawidi's camera" and now officially means
Widescreen and Infrared Digital Imaging as well as Cameras with Airfoil and Motor
or something else along those lines... I guess I'm the world champion at inventing stuff nobody understands, let alone remembers half an hour later...
As far as I can reconstruct it from the very first saved program files, I started programming in GW-BASIC in September 1994 on my Dad's machine: an 8086 Schneider PC with a 4 MHz CPU, 640k of memory, CGA graphics and two 360k floppy disk drives (and later a 20 MB harddisk - until it crashed in '96), and just once a week for two hours - it was mostly trying to figure out how to get a colored character jumping around on the screen in text mode.
Meanwhile I have done quite a lot in GW-BASIC, QBasic, QuickBASIC, Profan (all these languages are obsolete!), and played a bit with Turbo Pascal and Delphi. Since 1998, I have become quite an expert on POV-Ray (a 4D scene description and raytracing language) and VisualBASIC 6. Moreover I have basic knowledge in PHP, JavaScript, VBScript, 8086 Assembler and C/C++. At work, I mostly use MS-SQL, VB.NET and C#.NET.
Actually I feel I am somewhat addicted to the deep logic structure of programming languages and of computing in general - but I'm not necessarily stuck to the screen.
My current system, built in 2002, is an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ with 512 megs of RAM, 410 gigabytes on four hard disks, a TV capture card, and a 2048/384 DSL connection, but it consumes so much power that I'm considering to build a new system this year before moving out.
By the way, computers never were primarily a "game platform" for me, not even at the beginning.

| one of the first designs of my homepage |
The first version of this page was uploaded sometime in June 1998, at least that's the date of an old image that was used in the page. Back then I had no idea what an FTP server was, and I created my pages in Netscape Editor. The page was in German and awfully inhomogenuous (e.g. different background colors and layouts for each page), and offered only three programs, some trivial "tips and tricks" and a few funny screenshots... ugh... ;-)
About once a year I thought it was time for a relaunch, redesigned the entire site, and decided to upload new cool stuff. About a week later my interest decreased again and I left the project hanging in mid-air. Eventually I had removed all the ugly Netscape Editor code, and started to learn writing HTML, CSS and JavaScript in Notepad.
The logos and pseudonyms I used varied as well, from "T-AGE >gamesoft" to "VIRUS - Very Intelligently Reacting Useless Software" to "xxs.swp - extra extra small software productions". My first URL was "xxs.swp.home.pages.de" and later I registered for "xxs-swp.de". After I noticed that the focus of the site had moved from programs to images, I moved to "widicam.net" when CONCEPTNET offered to give me a domain and webspace for free (after a very successful practical semester I spent with them).
